Track looks towards future

By Azzaam Kapadia

For many years now, the Warrior track team has been efficient and many individuals on the team have never disappointed the fans. This season was no different as many of the runners were incredible and led the way for others’ success.  The boys and girls 4×400 team made states. Senior Chauncy Chewning will compete for the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles. Senior Dymier Jeffrey will be participating in the high jump.  The State Championship will be this Friday, June 2 at Todd Stadium in Newport News, Virginia.

In the Conference Championship, the track team made a great effort in their event. It was held at Glen Allen High School. In regionals, the girls came first overall in the 4×400 relay.  The leadership of the seniors has helped paint a path for the underclassmen and their successes.  The team will lose numerous seniors to graduation and will need to begin rebuilding next year.

We say farewell to the following seniors:

Senior Marjanae Coley is a great sprinter who works hard and does well in every meet and also helps to keep the team’s positive attitude. She ran a 12.79 second 100-meter dash and a 57.76 seconds 400-meter dash.

Senior Dymier Jeffrey is one of the top high jumpers in the nation and a sprinter as well; he always performs well and works hard. His high jump is 5’8” and his 300 meter hurdles record is 47.37 seconds.

Senior Tyrese Canada is the captain of the boys sprinting team. He tries his hardest and gives it his all on every race. He encourages the team and is a great sprinter and team leader. His 100-meter dash record is 11.44 seconds.

Senior D’andre Walker is a jumper and hurdler.  He has a tremendous work ethic and always gives it 100% whether it is a practice or a competition.  He inspires others to do great on their races. His triple jump is 39-3.

Senior Cordell Clayton is a sprinter.  He works his hardest and is a valuable member on the relay teams. He is not only a great athlete, but he also encourages others. He runs a 200-meter dash in 23.21 seconds and a 400-meter dash in 51.65 seconds.

Senior James Newsome is a field athlete. His 800-meter dash is in 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

Senior Ashley Roundtree is a sprinter. Her 200-meter dash was ran in 27.36 seconds. Her 100-meter dash was ran in 13.67 seconds.

This year’s track team was persistent and dedicated to everything they set out to do.  Each and every person kept driving week in and week out to achieve the best they can. Sophomore Caleb Huang was a returning track player who has only improved since last season. Last year, he ran a 5:31 mile and this year, he has improved to a 5:10. His two-mile time is 11:0 and his 800 meter is 2:13.

“This season was a success, everyone lowered their times down. We’re losing a few seniors too on the boys and girls teams, but many of them are taking their athletics to the next level, so we’re proud of that. I’m really pleased with the way our relay teams turned out; the 4×400 relays were a huge success for boys and girls. Next season, we hope to improve on our times and events even more and hopefully recruit some more people to make up for the seniors we lost this year” Huang said.

Many warrior runners agree that Coach Bowles played a major role in their successful season.

“Coach Bowles is a great coach. He always pushes us to be the best that we can and is very encouraging. He keeps the track team tight together, like a family. He wants the best for us in school and in track” Huang commented.

Despite the team losing numerous seniors this year, they are still packed with talent. Each and every player is determined to only improve on their performances.
