The Henrico boys’ varsity soccer team has played really hard this season; starting out with a depleted roster has proved to be a lot for the warriors to handle this year. Many of the starters on last year’s team were seniors and thus graduated, and a few of the juniors who played last year were unable to return for this season for various. Overall, though, the boys soccer team has pushed on and has not let their deficiencies get the better of them.
Many of the starters are playing together for the first time, and through this they have all grown as teammates and as friends. They are playing more cohesively as the season progresses, and will continue their hard efforts for the rest of season.
The team has put up a record of 3-7, which is actually not as bad as it sounds, considering the level of the team going into the season. Coach Sherrill has worked hard to get his players in the right positions, and they have worked hard in practice each day.
Senior striker Anish Bachhu said that, “Our goal as a team is to bring energy and communication to each game we play. As the season progresses, these aspects as well as our skills will continue to improve and will hopefully help us make it to the playoffs.”
In their first win, the boys’ overcame a feisty Varina team with a solid 4-1 win. Malaisamy (pictured) scored two goals, and senior Jose Martinez along with Bachhu each had one goal to help the warriors win.
The soccer team will continue their winning efforts, and hopefully mount a playoff push in the coming weeks. Their next game is this Friday, May 6th against the Highland Springs Springers.
