The Spooky Side of Phobias

Shriya Tripathi

spiderWe’re all scared of something, whether it be spiders, heights, or speaking in public. Many people are afraid of spiders; some are afraid of flying. Some people even have a phobia so crippling, they can’t even leave their home. Phobias develop when we have a constant fear or something. At first, a phobia is a small fearful thought about a certain object, creature or thing. Later on, however, a phobia becomes bigger as a person develops a stronger fear. We cannot always tell the origin of a phobia because it can be pretty vague. Our fears can either be rational or irrational. Since the 1970s, we have made great strides in reducing the prominence of a phobia in a person’s life through exposure therapy, which is a form of cognitive-behavior therapy in which the person actually engages with their fear in order to get over it.  However, did you know that there are types of phobias which are practically non-existent? http://www.fearof.net has listed the top ten phobias:

  • Arachnophobia- The fear of spiders
  • Ophidiophobia- The fear of snakes
  • Acrophobia- The fear of heights
  • Agoraphobia- The fear of open or crowded spaces
  • Cynophobia- The fear of dogs
  • Astraphobia- The fear of thunder or lightning
  • Claustrophobia- The fear of small spaces
  • Mysophobia- The fear of germs
  • Aerophobia- The fear of flying
  • Trypophobia- The fear of holes
